The new material can be rapidly dilated and solidified and restores the liquid again

Recently, Chinese scientists have made new progress in the field of liquid metal research. Tsinghua University professor Liu Jing research group and the Institute of physics and chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered a kind of universal flexible material -- PLUS material based on porous liquid metal (gallium indium alloy). This material can rapidly expand to more than 7 times of the original volume in the limit condition, and can even carry heavy objects floating on the surface after expansion. The relevant papers have been published online in the international academic journal material field of view.
Liu Jing research group in the liquid metal by internal loading of iron nanoparticles and the introduction of chemical reaction mechanism, can quickly create a flexible porous metal material, its pore size and flexible control, volume expansion is again quickly back into a liquid by heating, can be repeated expansion. These characteristics have opened new ideas for the manufacture of new underwater deformable machines, flexible manipulators, exoskeletons, and the development of flexible intelligent robots.
Experiments show that under heating conditions, PLUS material can form pore structure rapidly inside, and it can expand to several times of the original volume in a few minutes, even carry heavy load to the surface of the solution. In this process, the PLUS material is gradually changed from liquid to paste, and after treating with sodium hydroxide solution and drying, the abnormal hard porous metal material can be obtained. If the hydrochloric acid is added to the solid material again and stirred, it can be restored to the liquid. This liquid - solid conversion process can be repeated more than 100 times.
